My name is Quynh Nguyen (pronounced as Quinn When). I was born and raised in Vietnam until I was five years old and my family decided to move to the United States. I came to America without knowing a single word of English, and now I am studying to be an English teacher. I love to explore, travel, and try new things because the world is a big place and has so much to offer. In fact, the picture above captures the moment when I was at the Statue of Liberty National Monument. The photo helps remind me of the reason why I love to travel in the first place -there is still so much to see. My philosophy for teaching translates to my beliefs not only in relation to education, but also my life, and it is a quote from 50 Instructional Routines to Develop Content Literacy “knowledge is not fixed and static, and that new information shapes our current understandings of the biological, social, and physical world” (Fisher, Brozo, Frey, and Ivey 47). I want to remain active in my academic career; therefore I never want to stop learning.
I’ve decided to take ENGL 210 because it is important to be able to understand and demonstrate written communication skills. I’ve been trained to write academic essays, but never anything geared specific towards business, professional, and technical writing. Of course writing academic essays has much to do with professionalism as most require a formal tone, however, I feel it is always good to practice and learn more about professional business communication. As a future educator, and as a current college student, I want to be able to accurately produce a professional message towards my teachers, colleagues, students, and students’ parents in various ways. More importantly, business letters are legal documents where writers can be held liable for what is written, so I want to be sure to never put myself in a dangerous situation. I want to learn the many different forms of writing and communication such as business and professional writing, something I believe that ENGL 210 offers.
Taking the course online enables me to access the class and learn through a virtual environment. As mentioned before, I love traveling and exploring, and it’s something I do a lot of during the summer. Taking ENGL 210 online allows me to do two things at once: travel while taking a class.
